The 47th International Film Festival of India will begin in Goa from 20th of this month. This year the focus country of the festival will be South Korea.
Briefing media in New Delhi today, Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, best of Korean Cinema will be showcased during the festival. He said, 194 films from 88 countries have been selected for screening.
Mr Naidu said, IFFI will pay tribute to internationally acclaimed Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda. He said, Wadja’s film AfterImage will be the opening film of the festival. He said, the Centenary Award for Indian Film personality of the year will be presented to eminent playback singer S.P. Balasubramanyam.
The Minister said, his Ministry will provide assistance to filmmakers for promotion of their films at International Film Festivals of repute. He said, the Ministry will also provide assistance to films which are selected in any competition section of an international film festival of repute or India’s official nomination for Academy Awards under Foreign Film Category for promotional activities.
He said, Directorate of Film Festivals has been designated as the nodal agency for implementing the new initiative. He said, the present Government believes in the idea of India as a soft power and a film destination.
Speaking to media, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col Rajyavardhan Rathore said, a new award category of Best Debut Director will be introduced during the IFFI this year with Silver Peacock and 10 Lakh rupees cash award. He said, a total of 1032 entries came this year for the festival.
He said, IFFI will confer a special ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi medal on a film which reflects the ideal of peace, tolerance and non-violence. On the occasion, the poster for the festival was also released.
