The Union Cabinet declared a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect to former Prime MinisterIK Gujral who died in Delhi on Friday.
A Cabinet meeting attended by Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister AK Antony and New and Renewable Energy MinisterFarooq Abdullah among others condoled the death of Gujral.The tricolour will remain at half mast during the mourning period.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a condolence message termed Gujral as “an intellectual, a scholar-statesman and a gentleman politician” who left a mark in every position he held.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the state would always be indebted to him. “Gujral was a true son of the soil as he was instrumental in waiving off the long pending debt of Punjab during his brief stint as the prime minister,”
