Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered the release of an additional 4,000 cusecs from Mettur reservoir to ensure that there is water in the River Cauvery for the celebration of the Aadi Perukku festival. Jayalalithaa said the decision to release water had been made after due consideration to the amount of water in storage at the critical dam, as well as the current inflows.

According to reports she had been receiving requests from the people in the Cauvery delta to increase the water release.

Considering the storage position and the inflow into Mettur reservoir, she announced that an additional quantity will be released along with the 2,000 cusecs being released now for drinking water purposes.

“Having taken into account the amount of water available in storage as well as the current inflows, I have ordered the release of 6,000 cubic feet of water between July 27 and August 3 for Aadi Perukku, in addition to the 800 cubic feet that is presently being released to meet drinking water needs,” she added.

She added that the decision would enable the people of the regions along the path of the river to celebrate the Aadi Perukku in a fitting manner.
