West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Akash Banerjee was arrested on Wednesday for assaulting a traffic police official in Kolkata’s Kidderpore area.
According to police officials the arrest was made on the “express instructions of the chief minister”.
The incident occurred when Akash along with his two friends were stopped for violating traffic rules.
It is reported that when the traffic police personnel asked the car to stop for violating traffic rules, one of the three occupants started abusing him, saying he was the chief minister’s nephew and that the police were not doing their duty.
He further pushed the police official and assaulted him after which the police rushed to the spot and arrested all three of them.
All three accused are expected to be produced in court on Thursday.
